Playgrounds are more than swings and slides. They’re where children develop social skills, confidence, and resilience. Yet thousands of communities across the UK have outdated, unsafe, or unusable play spaces.

Alliance 4 Children’s Power 2 Play campaign brought this issue to national attention — and it worked. The government has now committed £18 million to improve and modernise playgrounds across the country.

How Play Improves Childhood Development

Research consistently shows that children who have access to quality play spaces:

  • Are more physically active
  • Show improved emotional wellbeing
  • Build stronger social connections
  • Perform better in school

A Win for Every Community

From rural villages to inner cities, families will soon see safer, more inclusive play environments. This is a victory built on persistence, evidence, and powerful public support.

What’s Next?

A4C will continue to push for design standards that ensure accessibility for all children, including those with disabilities.
